Background


As a licensed psychologist, Dr. Kimberly Tangen provides services to individuals, couples, families, groups and organizations. She also conducts psychological evaluations. These examinations are often carried out to clarify a diagnosis for treatment. They may also address issues of psychological functioning pertaining to a legal matter. Dr. Tangen, having lived in Latin America for a number of years, is bilingual and is able to provide her services to Spanish-speaking individuals. With over 16 years of experience in the field, Dr. Tangen has worked with a wide range of psychological issues. She sees the relationship with the client as central and strives to establish trust and rapport at the outset. Her approach is one of collaboration with clients to help them see what is possible in their lives and to let go of self-defeating patterns and limiting beliefs. Her practice is influenced by traditional schools of psychotherapy and by evolving areas within the field, including positive psychology and other self-inquiry processes such as the Sedona Method. With these complementary techniques, Dr. Tangen provides support and practical feedback to help clients effectively overcome life challenges and offers a highly personalized approach tailored to each client. Studies


Dr. Tangen, originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, obtained her undergraduate degree at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota where she majored in Spanish and Psychology. Her graduate training was acquired at the California School of Professional Psychology. She completed a Master’s in General Psychology and a Master’s in Organizational Behavior with a focus in Organizational Development. Her PhD degree was obtained in Clinical Psychology with a concentration in Cross-Cultural Psychology.

Experience


During her time in the field, Dr. Tangen has worked in hospitals, in-patient psychiatric facilities, emergency departments, day treatment programs, and counseling centers within urban clinics, schools and universities, maximum security correctional facilities and rural mental health sites. She also created and taught couple’s communication classes based on the work of Dr. John Gottman at Kaiser Permanente and has instructed college students in the area of general psychology. She is published with the areas of animal attitudes, psychology licensure and quality of life.

Credentials


Dr. Tangen is certified as a Qualified Medical Evaluator for the Division of Workers' Compensation. She also performs psychological pre-employment screening for peace officer candidates and meets the training requirements set by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). Appointed by the Board of Parole Hearings as an Independent Evaluator, Dr. Tangen carries out civil commitment examinations. She also completes functional capacity assessments for the determination of social security disability benefits. Dr. Tangen has worked in schools and outpatient clinics where she has evaluated for learning disability, neuropsychological impairment and diagnostic clarification. Dr. Tangen is a member of the American Psychological Association, California Psychological Association, the Los Angeles County Psychological Association, the Society for Personality Assessment, and the National Academy of Neuropsychology.
